Our Sunday roast is what a lot of people come for: roast meat, Yorkshire pudding, crisp roast potatoes and seasonal veg, served in a 1926 pub with a fire in winter and a garden in summer.
Guests keep mentioning the gravy. One called it the best they’d had in a pub.

1926 – 2026
A hundred years behind the bar
The building went up in 1926 as the Britannia Inn, replacing a cob-and-thatch alehouse, and it still has its diamond-paned leaded windows. Locals have called it the Dog and Donkey for generations, after Florrie Doney, who delivered coal around Knowle by donkey and cart with her dog trotting behind.
When the pub came up for sale, local musician Pete Manfield remortgaged his home to keep it as the heart of the village. Today it’s run by landlord Mark Loftin and a small team who love what they do.

A big beer garden, and dogs are part of the family
The garden has picnic benches under blue parasols, a lawn, flower beds and covered seating for showery days. Bring the dog: there are water bowls and treats, and well-behaved dogs are welcome inside too.

Questions we get asked a lot
Do I need to book for food?
We always recommend booking, especially for the Sunday roast. As a small independent pub the kitchen can close early if there are no bookings, so a quick call to 01395 904595 is the safest bet.
Are dogs allowed inside?
Yes. Well-behaved dogs are welcome in the beer garden and in the pub, and we keep water bowls and treats behind the bar.
How many people does the function room hold?
Up to 100 guests, with flexible layouts for seated meals, buffets and parties with a dance floor.
Is there parking?
Yes, there’s an on-site car park for guests.
When is the quiz?
Our quiz runs on alternate Wednesdays from 7:30pm. It’s £3 a player, teams of up to six, with six rounds, a picture round and Chase the Ace.
